Beta-hydroxy-beta-methylbutyrate, better known as HMB, is a compound derived from the amino acid leucine and is best known for helping preserve lean muscle mass. Its primary benefit is its anti-catabolic effect, meaning it helps reduce muscle breakdown. While HMB is popular in sports nutrition, its benefits extend well beyond athletics. It has been studied for its potential to help combat age-related muscle loss (sarcopenia), support recovery from illness or injury, improve bone health, and even reduce inflammation after surgery or trauma. HMB has also gained attention as a supportive supplement for people using GLP-1 medications, as it may help preserve muscle mass during weight loss and encourage the body to burn more fat rather than muscle.
Some of the most notable performance-related benefits of HMB include:
- Faster Recovery and Less Muscle Damage: HMB may help protect muscle fibers during intense exercise, reducing muscle protein breakdown and lowering markers of muscle damage, such as creatine kinase. In practical terms, this can mean less soreness and quicker recovery between workouts.
- Muscle Preservation During Dieting: During aggressive cutting phases or calorie restriction, HMB can help maintain lean muscle while promoting fat loss.
- Improved Strength and Power: Studies have shown that combining HMB with resistance training may enhance muscle growth, strength, and overall power output.
- Better Endurance Performance: Research also suggests HMB may improve both aerobic and anaerobic performance, making it beneficial for endurance athletes and combat sports competitors.
One of the most recognized HMB ingredients in the sports nutrition industry is myHMB®, which has been extensively researched for both safety and effectiveness. myHMB® works through a dual-action approach by helping reduce muscle breakdown while also supporting muscle protein synthesis.
myHMB® is available in two forms, depending on individual goals:
- myHMB® (Calcium HMB): The traditional calcium-bound form commonly used for recovery, strength support, and healthy aging.
- myHMB® FA (Free Acid): A faster-absorbing form available in liquids or capsules, often preferred by athletes and bodybuilders looking for quicker uptake and pre-workout muscle protection.
The most widely studied and recommended dosage is 3 grams daily. Since the body only produces small amounts of HMB naturally from leucine, it’s difficult to get effective levels through diet alone without consuming very large amounts of protein. For athletes, taking HMB about 30–60 minutes before training may provide the best results. It’s also commonly combined with supplements like creatine and protein powders to further support performance, recovery, and muscle retention
Key Takeaways: HMB is a leucine-derived supplement best known for preserving lean muscle mass by reducing muscle breakdown and supporting protein synthesis, making it valuable for athletes, aging adults, people recovering from illness or surgery, and those using GLP-1 weight-loss medications. Research-backed forms like myHMB® and myHMB® FA may improve recovery, strength, endurance, and fat loss while helping protect muscle during intense training or calorie restriction, with 3 grams daily being the most studied dose.
